Freelance Journalists do not Work ‘for Free’

Abstract

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has supported media industry workers since 1907. It classifies an increasingly wide range of activities as ‘journalism’ and its membership profile has changed accordingly. The proportion of freelances to staff continues to rise, reaching 30% of nearly 27, 000 members (over 40% of new members since 2013). Freelances need to know their rights when negotiating contracts, including clauses covering copyright, rates of pay and getting paid on time. The NUJ provides training, support and advice on such issues. It is also committed to Equal Opportunities to enable fair representation and attention to diverse needs. Power reports an analysis of the composition of the London Freelance Branch (LFB) membership, noting patterns of change. The work is a contribution to ensuring appropriate support of BAME, disabled and women members. LFB alone comprises almost 4000 members, from London, SE England, the rest of UK, Europe and worldwide.
