The Environmental Revolution: But does Labour Reap the Benefit from Green Jobs?

Abstract

The recent focus on the environment has brought about a focus on green jobs. This, is turn, has raised the question of whether green jobs have changed the standard of living of green job workers for the better. This study used the provision of health care and safety, affordable housing and a living wage for workers to determine this. The study also assessed that factors such as the quality of job training, level of investment, degree of unionization and the impact of the recession also influence the standard of living of green job workers. This study is confined to the clean energy, energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors of the energy industry and California was the chosen jurisdiction for its purpose. This is a qualitative study where a number of interviews were conducted with experts in California. The end results were recommendations for increasing the number of green jobs and improving the lives of green job workers under the scope of the social justice philosophies of John Stuart Mill, John Rawls and Stephen Leacock.
