Who Can Help Britain’s Vulnerable Workforce?

Abstract

This paper is an ambitious attempt to provide a broad overview of the causes and extent of the vulnerability of the British workforce, whether employed or unemployed, following the financial crisis of 2008. It notes the problems of the employed and the extent of unemployment in the current recession. Focussing throughout on the health risks to which the workforce is exposed it questions the extent to which employers, trade unions and Government can alleviate the situation. It looks at the risks to which the employed are exposed and the role of the law, the statutory enforcement agency, trade unions and employers in addressing these risks. It also considers what the Government is doing to assist and encourage the unemployed into work. It suggests that given the nature of twenty-first century society and the range of employment it offers, some responsibility must rest with the workforce itself.
