Various studies have shown that there is a relationship between single-mother families, gender violence, social exclusion, poverty and discrimination, which we consider important to examine because of the serious repercussions it has on the people who make up these households. Gender-based violence often forces women who suffer abuse at the hands of their partners to begin a new chapter in their lives with the children they had with their partner and/or children from a previous relationship, or alone if they have no children of their own. These women, who have suffered physical and psychological damage from which they have not yet fully recovered, face a bleak outlook that can lead to significant financial difficulties, that they may find hard to overcome. We believe it is crucial to analyse the circumstances of these women, as well as the resources available to them, so they can have equal opportunities and develop a professional career, that would be vital for strengthening their seriously damaged self-esteem and improving the well-being of themselves and of those who depend on them. These resources would also be extremely useful for women who have chosen to raise a family alone. Therefore, we have outlined the situation of victims of gender-based violence and the most significant challenges they face, reflecting on the areas where progress should be made, so that these women, and their families, can achieve an adequate level of well-being and pursue their life goals. This would empower women in conflict with their partners to make free decisions and prevent situations of violence from arising.
